Dubai Desert Safari: Everything You Need to Know Before You Go

A Dubai desert safari is the most popular activity for visitors to the UAE — and it consistently ranks as the highlight of people's trips. But with dozens of operators, multiple safari types, and a wide range of prices, choosing the right experience can be confusing. This guide covers everything you need to know.

What Is a Dubai Desert Safari?

A desert safari is a guided excursion into the red sand dunes surrounding Dubai, typically combining off-road driving with cultural experiences at a traditional Bedouin camp. The Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve — a 225 km² protected nature reserve — is the most popular location, offering dramatic dunes and a chance to spot Arabian oryx and sand gazelles in the wild.

Most safaris follow a similar structure: hotel pickup in the late afternoon, dune bashing in a 4x4 Land Cruiser, arrival at a Bedouin camp, activities (camel riding, sandboarding, henna, falconry), sunset, and a buffet dinner with live entertainment.

Types of Desert Safari

Evening Desert Safari (Most Popular)

The classic Dubai desert safari departs around 3–4 PM and returns by 9–10 PM. It includes:

  • Dune bashing: 30–45 minutes of exhilarating off-road driving over the dunes in a 4x4 Land Cruiser. Drivers are experienced professionals who know exactly how far to push the vehicle.
  • Camel riding: A short camel ride at the camp — a quintessential desert experience.
  • Sandboarding: Slide down the dunes on a board. More fun than it looks, and surprisingly good exercise.
  • Henna painting: Traditional temporary tattoos applied by skilled artists.
  • Falconry display: Watch trained falcons in flight — a deeply traditional Emirati art form.
  • Sunset photography: The dunes at sunset are extraordinary. Bring your camera.
  • Buffet dinner: A generous spread of Arabic and international cuisine, served under the stars.
  • Live entertainment: Belly dancing, Tanoura (whirling dervish) performance, and live music.

Morning Desert Safari

Morning safaris depart around 8–9 AM and return by noon. They skip the dinner and entertainment but offer cooler temperatures, better photography light, and a more peaceful experience. Ideal for families with young children, photography enthusiasts, and those who prefer to avoid the evening crowds.

Overnight Desert Safari

Stay in the desert overnight in a traditional Bedouin tent. You'll experience the full evening programme, sleep under the stars, and wake to a desert sunrise with a light breakfast before returning to Dubai. One of the most memorable experiences available in the UAE.

Private Desert Safari

A private safari uses a dedicated vehicle and guide for your group only. You set the pace, choose your activities, and have the camp experience without sharing it with strangers. Highly recommended for couples, honeymoons, and families with children. The price difference versus a shared safari is significant, but the experience is incomparably better.

Private vs Shared Safari: Which Should You Choose?

Shared safari (AED 100–200 per person): You join a group of up to 6 people in a Land Cruiser. The camp is shared with other groups. Good value, social, and perfectly enjoyable for solo travellers and couples who don't mind company.

Private safari (AED 500–1,500 for a group): Your own vehicle, your own guide, your own pace. The camp experience is more intimate. Worth every dirham for families, couples celebrating a special occasion, or anyone who values a more personal experience.

Our recommendation: If budget allows, go private. The dune bashing is more tailored to your comfort level, the photography opportunities are better, and the overall experience is significantly more memorable.

What to Wear on a Desert Safari

Comfort is the priority. The desert can be surprisingly cool after sunset, even in winter.

Recommended:

  • Loose, comfortable clothing (long trousers and a light top)
  • Closed-toe shoes or trainers (sandals fill with sand)
  • A light jacket or layer for the evening (October–March)
  • Sunglasses and sunscreen for morning safaris

Avoid:

  • Tight or restrictive clothing (you'll be climbing in and out of a 4x4)
  • Flip-flops or open sandals
  • Expensive jewellery (sand gets everywhere)

For women: Modest dress is appreciated at the camp, though not strictly enforced. A light scarf is useful for the camel ride.

Is Dune Bashing Safe?

Yes — when done with a reputable operator. Licensed safari operators use experienced drivers who know the dunes intimately and adjust the intensity based on passenger comfort. Vehicles are regularly maintained and equipped with safety equipment.

That said, dune bashing is not suitable for:

  • Pregnant women
  • People with serious back or neck conditions
  • Young children under 3 years old

If you're concerned, ask your operator for a gentler experience — most will accommodate.

What to Expect at the Bedouin Camp

The camp is a traditional-style Bedouin settlement with carpeted seating areas, fire pits, and a central stage for entertainment. Most camps serve a buffet dinner with a mix of Arabic dishes (hummus, mezze, grilled meats, rice) and international options. Soft drinks are included; alcohol is not typically available at standard camps (premium private camps may offer it).

The entertainment — belly dancing and Tanoura — runs for about an hour after dinner. It's theatrical and fun, and the Tanoura performance (a spinning dance with colourful skirts) is genuinely mesmerising.
